After a long history of establishing water-powered flour mills in regional New South Wales, there are records that the Singleton Family took on the new technology of steam engines and was involved in constructing at least three steam-powered flour mills.
In Singleton township, Benjamin Singleton Senior established two steam-powered flour mills in 1838 and 1851, then his son, Benjamin Singleton Junior, established another steam mill in 1860 .
In West Maitland, Benjamin's son in law, George Yeomans, also became the proprietor of the Yeomans' Steam Flour Mill in 1840. This mill and others in the town are under investigation.
